Medical Section of the School of Spiritual Science
As one of 12 disciplines of the School of Spiritual Science, Goetheanum, in Dornach (Switzerland), the Medical Section is the international coordination center for Anthroposophic Medicine. Its core tasks are:
- the promotion and coordination of both research and further development of Anthroposophic Medicine and its associated therapies
- the organization of congresses, meetings and conferences, as well as trainings and continuing education modules, to deepen knowledge of Anthroposophic Medicine all around the world
- supporting publication of specialist articles, particularly related to the six “Care” areas, but also on topics such as medical ethical, the spiritual training of therapeutic professions; these are offered in specialty journals, books and on the Anthromedics online platform.
- advocating for freedom within the therapeutic process, for the possibility for a diversity of healing methods and pluralism in medicine
- to further develop the system of anthroposophic medicine, as laid out by Rudolf Steiner in numerous lectures and the book “Fundamentals of Therapy. An Extension of the Art of Healing”.

The Medical Section was founded by Dr. phil. Rudolf Steiner in 1923, an impulse that began with the appointment of Dr. med. Ita Wegman as the first head of the Section. Since that time, the medical section has been active worldwide, supporting and promoting the development of the different medical and therapeutic professions, as well as the further development of institutions and training initiatives. The medical section fulfills a core task within the global, living “organism” of the anthroposophic medicine movement: the perception and coordination of all these international activities, working to provide them a home at the Goetheanum, so that spiritual impulses can also then be sent out into the world.
The working culture of the medical section follows the motto of social ethics:
"A healthy social life is only found,
when in the mirror of each soul
the whole community finds its reflection,
and when in the whole community
the virtue of each one is living."
Rudolf Steiner, Motto of Social Ethics, 5.11.1920
